FULL HOUSE

Hi, Guys!,

Have you ever watched FULL HOUSE? It was a well-known American sitcom broadcasted from 1987 until 1995. When I was younger, all my cousins and I loved watching it!

Danny Tanner is a widow and has three daughters: DJ, Stephanie and Michelle. So he asked his friend Joey and his brother in law Jessi to come and live with him and his three daughters in San Francisco.Later, DJ's friend Kimmy appears as well as Jessi's girlfriend, Rebecca.

As I said before, my family and I had a very good time watching this comedy, there were many significant values, LOVE, BEING ALWAYS TOGETHER, COMMUNICATION to solve every argument, ... it was really tender when Jessi talked to his little nephew Michelle.

Now, why don't we watch this episode? Steve Urkel appears and imitates Jessi's accent. It's deeply enjoyable!!!

E N G L I S H P L A Y S

Hi, there!,

Our dearest playwright SHAKESPEARE wrote in his play As You Like It, this:

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages".

Maybe due to his quote, maybe because I love theatre and performing plays, ... I don't know why, but I believe that if you are a teacher, you are a good actor / actress, don't you think so?

Anyway, are you going to start rehearsing a PLAY or a kind of MUSICAL to the end of this academic year? Well, I'm going to challenge you ... why don't you (teachers and pupils) prepare an ENGLISH PLAY this year? My pupils and I love performing plays, it's a great experience!!!

I strongly believe it's one of the best way to encourage students to speak English, to memorise, to motivate them, to improve their pronunciation, to make them feel better speaking up, ... and so on.

We had already performed wellknown plays such as ROMEO and JULIET, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, childish ones such as THE LITTLE DOLLAR, ALADDI
N and THE LAMP, ... when we were asked to perform the famous DON QUIXOTE in English. Well, it was a great challenge and a very hard task because I had to translate some passages taken from the novel. Once again, that experience WAS UNFORGETTABLE, AMAZING!!!

Come on, why don't you look for a short English play? or you can take some significant fragments of a play, ... even more, you can ask the students to write a short play which they have to perform in class later? You'll never forget this experience!

In these days, my pupils and I have to perform a short play based on the Scottish tale, related to the Comenius project; as well as the most important songs of the film GREASE. What about you? Do you dare to do so? ;)

COMENIUS PROJECT: Welcome to Europe ! ! !

(poster made by our pupils and their Art Teacher Cristina)

Hi, there!,

Today, I'd like to talk about the COMENIUS PROJECT. Have you ever heard about it?

The Comenius programme let European students, from pre-school until secondary, know, learn and understand the diversity of European cultures, languages and values.

This European project pursues several goals, such as: to encourage language learning, innovative ITC-based content, services and better teaching techniques and practises. Because of that, we, as English teachers (within the European framework), play an important role, and once again, our students see the importance of learning English.

If you are more interested, you can find more accurate description of this project in:

From my experience, I can tell you that the students become more aware of Europe, they realise that English is the most international language, ... and they feel really happy when they send as well as receive letters, postcards from the other foreign students.

Therefore, nearly every term, each school have to exchange a Recipe Book, Tales, Christmas, etc. Both written in English and in their mother tongue.

At last but no least, the Comenius teachers have to travel to other schools, which are also members of that Comenius group, to see children's tasks, to meet and speak to those students in English, ... and the host teachers organise trips around their cities, traditional parties, and the visitor teachers enjoy the cities, eat the typical food, ... It is always an enriching experience!

PS. Regards to all my mates, we are always working hard in this project.

23rd April, William SHAKESPEARE

Hi, Guys!,

Today is an important day in history because we remember and reread one of the greatest playwright and poet, William
Shakespeare. This English writer was born in Stratford-on-Avon on 23 April 1564. He also died on 23 April 1616. He was 52 years old.

Let me point out some significants moments of his life...
In 1592, it is believed that Shakespeare had written the three parts of ‘Henry VI’. In 1593, ‘Venus and Adonis’ was Shakespeare's first published poem, and he dedicated it to the young Henry Wriothesley, the 3rd earl of Southampton.

In 1594, Shakespeare composed, among other plays, ‘Richard III’, ‘The Comedy of Errors’, and ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, he also became an actor and playwright for the Lord Chamberlain's Men, which became the King's Men after James I's ascension in 1603. At this time, the female roles were performed by young boys. Besides, the noble people gave some dresses and gowns to these theatre companies. There were also some well-known actors such as Richard Burgage who performed some plays written by Shakespeare. By 1596, the company Lord Chamberlain's Men had performed the classic Shakespeare plays ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Richard II’, and ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’. In 1599, he became a partner in the ownership of the Globe Theatre.

At the beginning of the 17th century, one of the first of his great tragedies, ‘Hamlet’ was performed. The next play, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’, was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I, who wanted to see another play that included the popular character Falstaff.

Later on, Shakespeare produced these masterpieces as ‘Othello’, ‘King Lear’, ‘Macbeth’, and ‘The Tempest’. In 1609, his sonnets, probably written during the 1590s, were published. The 154 sonnets are marked by the recurring themes of the mutability of beauty and the transcendent power of love and art.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:
Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

ALL ABOUT YOU!!!! Describing your personality...

Hi, Guys!,

Are you ready to another English lesson online? Well, thanks to internet and Mr Duncan, we can learn and improve a lot! In this video, we are going to see that the way you behave and act with other people actually reflects our character and personality.
Now, let's focus on the vocabulary used, ok?

What do the following words mean? EXTROVERT, GENIUS, CHEERFUL, BITTER, CYNICAL or ODD? Are these positive or negative adjectives?

OK

Hi, Guys!,

As far as I am concerned, there are many attempts to explain the origins of this curious colloquial expression OK.

The fisrt theory, that I am going to mention, has been supported by many scholars and even the Oxford dictionary, which points out that OK comes from the pronunciation of the initials of "all correct"/'ol koret/ (sorry because I have no phonetic symbols in my keyboard).

Secondly, the other theory with at least a degree of plausibility is that the term was originated among Black African slaves, and represents a word meaning 'all right, yes indeed' in various West African languages. Unfortunately, historical evidence enabling the origin of this expression to be finally and firmly established may be hard to unearth.

In addition, according to Oxford Dictionary, OK may derive from the Scots expression 'och aye', or the Greek ola kala ('it is good'), or the Choctaw Indian oke or okeh ('it is so'), or the French aux Cayes ('from Cayes', or even, a port in Haiti with a reputation for good rum) or au quai ('to the quay', as supposedly used by French-speaking dockers).

What do you think it is the best theory or the most probable one?

The COSBY Show

Hi, Guys!,

When I was a child, my cousins and I used to watch this fantastic TV serie,
THE COSBY SHOW.

Not surprisingly, the show had parallels to Cosby's actual family life: like the characters Cliff and Claire Huxtable, Cosby and his wife Camille were college educated, financially successful, and had five children. Essentially a throwback to the wholesome family situation comedy, The Cosby Show was unprecedented in its portrayal of an intelligent, affluent, nonstereotypical African-American family.

I personally think that if you watch some episodes, you are going to learn some important necessary values in our current society, apart from improving your Enlgish.
