English Corner at School

Hi, there!!!,
PEACE DAY

This is the English Corner at my school. Thanks to our students' work, the English Corner provides them opportunities to learn new vocabulary, to approach the target language in a different way, and also, this board helps them to develop a greater curiosity to the British or American culture.

English Calendar PROJECT

English Calendar Project (my students are working on this)
Hi, There!!!,

These days, my students and I are working on an English Calendar, not only they can see the date, weather everyday, but also, they will learn a new English WORD, it's like a visual dictionary. I've divided them into eight groups, every group has their own month and they look up 20 words per month. Obviously, every month stands for a different topic and the students have to find the word, its phonetic symbols and a picture which helps them to understand its meaning.
Thanks to this interesting project, my students are getting involved in the process of learning, they are working in a cooperative way, they can learn a new word easily everyday, and last, but not least, they are decorating the class!!! It's a wonderful and enriching experience! I hope you'll like it.

Learning English is always fun!!! ;)

Let's go on DeCoRaTiNg OuR EnGLisH ClaSS!!!

Hi, Guys!,

Let's start a new year decorating our English labs, classrooms, ... It's a kind of RENEWAL, isn't it?
This time, I'm going to ask some help..., I'm going to ask my pupils to write some InSpiRatIOnal quotes for them, we'll use these to make posters and we'll decorate our class, corridors, etc. I think it's essential to feel involved and motivated from the very beginning. So, I promise I'll take some pictures when we've done it! SURE;)

I'll give you some examples:
"Ain't no mountain high, ain't no valley low, ain't no river wide enough"
"The future is in your hands"
"Let's try again"

Now, you can click on the following links to get some interesting posters:

CLASSROOM LANGUAGE

Hi, Teachers!,

I'm sure you, teachers, already use most of these sentences in your English class, but I just want to refresh our memory and post these common expressions. If you use others, I'll be pleased to add them to this list! They are really functional for our students, they feel more comfortable when they see these sentences on a poster in class, they look at them and speak up!

Your students and you, as a teacher, can also create your own list to encourage them to speak up, learn new words, refresh their memory, and so on. Now, are you ready? 1,2,3, GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I've chosen 30 sentences, I know there are more, but there could be enough for our students, then, we can add new others.

Practical Idioms as well as Decorating Your Classroom

Hi, Teachers!,

Many times in class, our students ask us "How can I say 'hacer la vista gorda' in English?", "Fat sight?", "Oh, no, no, ... they say: "Turn a blind eye".
Becuase of that, it's very constructive and effective if you use a small white board in class and every week, you write down a new English idiom for your students.Even more, I'm going to propose you to have a look at the following list.

Obviously, you can create your own list of idioms and hang these later as a poster.

hacer falta to be lacking hacer la vista gorda to turn a blind eye
hacer las maletas to pack

hacer lo posible to do one's best

hacer muecas to make faces

hacer pinta to play hookey

llorar a lágrima viva to cry like a baby

llorar a mares to cry a lot

lo hecho hecho está what is done is done
lo mismo da it's all the same

manos a la obra get to work

meter la pata to mess up

muerto de cansancio dead tired

ni pensarlo don't even think about it

no poder dar crédito a los oídos to not believe my ears

por consguiente as a result
por lo tanto therefor

prender fuego a to set fire to

FuN PrOjEcT for ChRiStMaS (post 2)

Hi, Teachers!,

Would you like to decorate your classroom for Christmas? Well, let me give you some interesting ideas.

1. CHRISTMAS TREE
Three years ago, my workmate Cris, who is the Art teacher, carried out a similar Christmas tree with her pupils, and it was brilliant!

You only need some pieces of multi-colored cardboard, especially green, red and yellow. To make the Christmas tree, you have to draw on the green cardboard the shape of the tree, then cut it out. After that, you have to do the same with the little stars and red balls, where students can wirte their wishes fot the coming year. If you do so with your older students, you can practise the grammar construction: "I wish". So, every pupil could take part, decorate and learn English. Speaking of younger students, they could feel more involved and enthusiastic with this learning activity.

2. CHRISTMAS VOCABULARY ON POSTERS
To learn and pracitse new vocabulary related to Christmas, you may need to spend some time showing your students some flashcards, posters, etc. but, why don't you ask your pupils to do these posters?

There are many possible ways to find out these Christmas words, for instance: INTERNET! Thus, your students, divided into small groups, have to look for as many Christmas words as they can, then they'll do their posters.

Afterwards, they can show the other children their posters and ask each other about the new words.

I hope you'll like these fun ideas! :)

CALENDAR, Decorating Your ENGLISH Classroom

Hi, there!,

As far as I am concerned, creating an English Calendar is another amusing tool to teach English, specially with primary students, they feel more involved in English classroom, they are usually more cooperative, aren't they? Nevertheless, this year, I'm going to carry out this teaching recipe with my upper-secondarypupils, I hope they'll learn more...

Well, if you're a teacher, you can design your own calendar or look at this webpage: http://www.projectbritain.com/calendar/ Then, you must hang this on the wall. Below the calendar, you must add a new word everyday, with a picture, phonetic pronunciation, with a sentence showing the meaning of this new word. So, everyday, as an ice breaker, you can ask your pupils the date, read and learn a new word. Even more, you can design your own calendar focusing on a particular semantic field every month.

Do you like my teaching recipe? I hope so!!! From my experience, children and young secondary sutdents are more enthusiastic with this idea.

Are You Decorating Your ENGLISH Classroom?

Hi, Teachers!,

I think that a teacher's classroom says much about the teacher and his /her style and class expectations. If your students are young, you can ask them to make some posters for the classroom with some useful sentences, such as: "Can you repeat, please?, How do you say it in English?, Can you write this word on the board?".

Then, obviously, these senteces must be used in class. By this way, we can improve their speaking and they feel more involved. It is also important to decorate all the corridors and rooms with English labels. It's not very difficult, you can make these labels with your students in the first lesson, I'm sure they will improve their English vocabulary.

Besides, you can ask your secondary students to decorate the classroom with motivational inspiring posters, such as "No Mountains Too High For You To Climb".
I encourage you to do so with your students, it's easy and rewarding, bear in mind they will learn more, when they are active and creating ;-)

ICE BREAKERS, Coming Back to School

Hi, Teachers!,

Are you ready? New year, new goals, new hopes! Don't you think so?
Well, I'm going to show you some amusing Ice Breakers for the first lesson. I hope you'll find them interesting!

For Secondary and Upper-secondary students: IDENTITY CARDS
This activity is very recommendable, specially when you, as a teacher, don'tknow your new students, or you would like to know them more. You need as many pieces of cardboard as students you have. Your students have to fill in the following gaps: NAME, SURNAMES, GROUP, AGE, EMAIL, HOBBIES, FAVOURITE FILM and SINGER, PLANS FOR THE FUTURE and SUGGESTION or REQUEST.
When they complete all the information, they start talking to their classmates and ask them some personal questions. So, they practise English from the very beginning and know their classmates.

For Primary students: "WHO IS ...?"
The teacher delivers every student a piece of paper. Here, children write their names. The teacher collects these papers and gives them away again. The teacher asks one student to stand up and say:"Hi, my name is Alex" and then, picking up the piece of paper, he / she will ask:"Who is Martha?". Now, Martha will stand up and repeat this again. It's a very easy entertaining way to know each other. If you want to complicate this activity, you can add more information.

I hope you'll like it!
