Past Simple vs. Past Continuous

Past Simple

Past Continuous

1. To talk about sth that started before a certain time in the past and was still in progress at that time. Ex. At 10.30, we were walking along the Regent Street.

2. To describe a situation, ot give the background to a scene that happened in the past.

Ex. Last night, it was raining cats and dogs; the wind was blowing. What were they wearing? They were wearing new blue jeans.

3. We don't normally use the past continuous with verbs not normally used in the continuous form, such as: know, want, like, etc.

4. Two simultaneous or parallel situations:

Ex. I was studying in my bedroom while my parents were chatting in the living room.
