CLASSROOM LANGUAGE

Hi, Teachers!,

I'm sure you, teachers, already use most of these sentences in your English class, but I just want to refresh our memory and post these common expressions. If you use others, I'll be pleased to add them to this list! They are really functional for our students, they feel more comfortable when they see these sentences on a poster in class, they look at them and speak up!

Your students and you, as a teacher, can also create your own list to encourage them to speak up, learn new words, refresh their memory, and so on. Now, are you ready? 1,2,3, GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I've chosen 30 sentences, I know there are more, but there could be enough for our students, then, we can add new others.

Kate Morton, a great contemporary writer

Hi, There!,

Do you know KATE MORTON? Have you ever read one of her famous novels?

Well, in my humble opinion, undoubtedly she is one of the best contemporary writers. K. Morton, born in 1976 in Australia, has written: The House at Riverton (2006), The Forgotten Garden (2008) and The Distant Hours (2010). All her novels have become best-sellers all over the world!

From her early childhood, she loved reading books, especially those written by Enid Blyton. She grew up in Queensland (Australia) and after attending school, she studied a Licentiate in Speech and Drama from Trinity college in London. At the same time, Kate enrolled in a degree in English Literature at the University of Queensland, graduating with First Class Honors. On that basis, she won a scholarship and could complete a Masters degree focusing on tragedy in Victorian literature.

Because of that, we could find many Gothic elements in her novels, since she is very enthusiastic of Bronte sisters, Dickens, Daphne du Marier, Poe or Lucy Clifford.

Therefore, I recommend reading her fantastic novels, all the characters are connected mixing current and past events, all her books are really entertaining and well-written. So, when you read an English novel, you can enjoy it and learn new vocabulary, don't you think so?

I hope we'll never stop reading :)

Commom European Framework of Reference for Languages

HI, Guys!,

Sometimes, you ask me about your current English level, what level B1 consists of, etc. Therefore, why don't you pay attention to the following charts? They're quite useful and interesting!

Well, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (abbreviated as CEFR), is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe. Its aim is to provide a common method of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe. As you can see, there are six reference levels.

level description
A1 Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2 Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

ARE YOU READY? A new English Quiz Show

Hi, There!,

I've just watched a very new English TV programme for children in Canal Sur, the Andalusian channel in Spain. From my point of view, it's quite entertaining, fun and motivating for young learners. There are many different English tests, all the primary (5º&6º, that is, 11 or 12 years old) students can take part in this quiz show if they are studying at bilingual schools in Andalucia.

Obviously, this new educational programme wants to improve children's English level, to encourage them to speak English, etc.

I think it's worthwhile, I'm really happy to watch this type of Quiz Shows on TV. Now, ArE YoU ReAdY?

If you want to watch this great quiz, click on: ARE YOU READY?
