RePoRtinG VerBS (Reported Speech)

Hi, Guys!!!, 


Have you ever heard about RePoRtinG VerBS? Yes, sure! (In class) ;)

These forms are used to report what others have said, but these verbs can more accurately describe what somebody has said. Depending on the verb chosen to rephrase a sentence, you need to use a different structure, in other words, if you use "ADMIT", you should take into account that this verb can be followed by a Gerund or a THAT Clause. 

For example: "I acted inappropriately", he told the police.
He admitted that he had acted inappropriately OR He admitted acting inappropriately.

Reported Speech ( 4 ) Secondary and Upper-secondary


Hi, Guys!,

Today, I'm posting some basic exercises of REPORTED SPEECH. You'll have to rewrite the following sentences in Direct Speech into Indirect Speech. After that, if you want to practise more, just CLICK on the LABELS - Reported Speech, you'll find loads of exercises, right?


Rewrite these sentences into Reported Speech, do you know these students?:

1. Ann said: "Carmen likes watching romantic films".
Ann said that Carmen liked watching romantic films.
2. Julia told Irene: "I'll meet you here later".
Julia told Irene that she would meet her there later.
3. Javier complained to me:"It's too hot here".
Javier complained to me that it was too hot there.
4. Paul said to Javier:"Fernando and I are going to organise a party this weekend".
Paul said to Javier that Fernando and he were going to organise a party that weekend.
5. Auxi told me:"I have arrived late this morning".
Auxi told me that she had arrived late that morning.
6. Alvaro told his brother:"We were training until our coach left".
Alvaro told his brother that they had been training until their coach had left.
7. María told us:"My mother bought me a new cell-phone yesterday".
María told us that her mother had bought her a new cell-phone the day before.
8. Javier told me:"I don't understand the Reported Speech".
Javier told me that he didn't understand the Reported Speech.
9. Mª Carmen told Helen:"We had a very good time in Granada, it was awesome!"
Mª Carmen told Helen that they had had a very good time in Granada, it had been awesome.
10. Mª Jesús told me:"I can't understand this, because I missed your lesson yesterday".

Mª Jesús told me that she couldn't understand that, because she had missed my lesson the day before.

Rewrite the following questions into Reported Speech.

1. Claudia asked Javier:"What are you doing this afternoon?"
Claudia asked Javier what he was doing that afternoon.

2. Belén asked Marina:"Did you see my blog? It's so cute!"
Belén asked Marina if she had seen her blog. It was so cute.

3. Juan Carlos asked Emilio:"Have you caught my folders?"
Juan Carlos asked Emilio if he had caught his folders.

4. Juanma asked Jose:"Can I borrow you pencil, please?"
Juanma asked Jose if he could borrow his pencil.

5. Marta asked MaryG:"Will you and Andrea go to London this summer?"
Marta asked MaryG if she and Andrea would go to London that summer.

6. Rocío asked Carmen:"Are you going to meet Charlie this weekend?"
Rocío asked Carmen if she was going to meet Charlie that weekend.

7. Valme asked Manolo:"Will you close the door, please?"
Valme aske Manolo if he would close the door.

8. Ale asked Miguel:"What are you talking about?"
Ale asked Miguel what he was talking about.

9. Manuel asked José Luis:"Where do you live?"
Manuel asked José Luis where he lived.

10. Valme asked them:"Have you seen this Friends episode?"
Valme asked them if they had seen that Friends episode.

Reported Speech ...(post 3) more exercises with key answers




Hi there, Guys!,

Very soon, you are going to take another exam, I suppose you need to review the Reported Speech again. So, I'm going to release more exercises with the key answers. If you have any question, you can ask me anything in class, ok?


Write these sentences into Reported or Direct Speech:1. The man stated: “I didn’t steal anything yesterday. I won it in a lottery a month ago”.
The man stated that he hadn't stolen anything the day before. He had won it in a lottery a month before.
2. Mary asked him: “Why aren’t you calling me today?”
Mary asked him why he wasn't calling her that day.
3. My parents suggested me: “Why don’t you study everyday?”
My parents suggested me not studying everyday.
4. Karsts wanted to know how much money they had.
Karsts wanted to know: "How much money do you have?"
5. She asked Laura to sit down and not to talk to Jane then.
She asked Laura:" Sit down and don't talk to Jane now".
6. Peter told us: “I’m going to the club tonight. Do you want to come with me?”
Peter told us that he was going to the club that night. If we wanted to come with them.
7. The teacher said: “Don’t forget that your exams are starting next week!”
The teacher said not to forget that our exams were starting the following week.
8. My mother asked me: “Will you come home tomorrow?”
My mother asked me if I would come home the following day.



Turn the following sentence into reported speech (direct or indirect):1. “He has drunk too much tonight”, Peter said.
Peter said that he had drunk too much that night.2. The ecologist explained that we could save a lot of trees by recycling paper.
The ecologist explained: "You can save a lot of trees by recycling paper".
3. Mum told us:” Give me your keys and don’t forget to phone me when you arrive”.
Mum told us to give her our keys and not to forget to phone her whe we arrived.
5. William asked her:” Did you see my sunglasses that I left here yesterday?”
William asked her if I had seen his sunglasses that he had left there the day before.

Reported Speech (post 2)

More exercises related to Reported Speech. Good luck and have a nice weekend!

Here you have some statements in direct speech. Repeat them using reported or indirect speech.
1. He said: “I am always hungry.”

2. “I have already finished my dinner,” Tom said.

3. “The bus will be here in a minute,” she told me.

4. Mrs. Black exclaimed: “I’m always trying to help you.”

5. They said: “We are going away tomorrow.”

6. “I will lock the door when I leave,” he told me.

7. “It’s colder today than it was yesterday,” Peter remarked.

8. “You will break the lamp If you play football in the sitting-room,” their mother said.

9. He assured me: “I can do it by myself.”

10. Peter looked out of the window and said: “It may rain in a while.”


Here you have some statements in indirect or reported speech. Try to turn them into direct speech. Don’t forget the use of inverted commas and the use of colon or comma if you place the introductory verb before the direct speech statement.
1. They said that they would take the dog for a walk.

2. He said that the students had finished their exams.

3. My friends told me that everybody was waiting for Jim.

4. Mary said that she couldn’t do all the work by herself.

5. The postman said that Mrs. David might receive the letter by the morning post.

6. The old man said that he didn’t like wine.

7. They told us at the station (that) the train had left an hour before.

8. David said (that) he had bought the book the day before.

9. The witness told the judge that he was telling the truth. The whole truth and only the truth.

10. Bob remarked (that) it would be difficult to climb that mountain.



Here you have some direct commands. Turn them into indirect commands. Look at the example:
“Let me down!” said Gulliver to the big man. Gulliver asked the big man to let him down.

1. “Don’t drop me to the ground!” Gulliver begged the farmer.

2. “Speak louder!” the farmer told Gulliver.

3. “Take me to your house,” Gulliver asked the man.

4. “Come and see what I’ve found,” the farmer said to his wife.

5. “Put it away!” cried the farmer’s wife.

6. “Come and have dinner with us!” the farmer told Gulliver.

7. “Lie down and rest for a while.” Mrs. Perkins said to her husband.

8. “Don’t be silly!” said Charlie’s mother to her son.

9. “Don’t forget your glasses!” said Mr. Brown.

10. “Don’t forget congratulate her when she passes it!”, Joseph said.


Here you have some indirect commands. Turn them into direct commands. Look at the example:
Example:
The Happy Prince told the Swallow to fly over the city and watch his people.
The Happy Prince said to the Swallow: “Fly over the city and watch my people.”
1. I told Betty to come near the window.

2. She asked the shop-attendant to show her another dress.

3. The farmer told his dig to lie down.

4. Gulliver begged the farmer not to leave him alone.

5. I invited my friends to come and have lunch with us.

6. The doctor advised me not to smoke so many cigarettes.

7. The doctor advised me to walk for 2 hours every day.

8. Mr. Clarke ordered the waiter to bring him a clean fork.

9. I told the children to get up an hour earlier in the morning.

10. Peter’s father told him to have his hair cut.

Reported Questions
Put these questions into reported speech. Examples:“How old are you?” Mrs Thorne asked Brenda. Mrs Thorne asked Brendan how old he was.
