CLASSROOM LANGUAGE

Hi, Teachers!,

I'm sure you, teachers, already use most of these sentences in your English class, but I just want to refresh our memory and post these common expressions. If you use others, I'll be pleased to add them to this list! They are really functional for our students, they feel more comfortable when they see these sentences on a poster in class, they look at them and speak up!

Your students and you, as a teacher, can also create your own list to encourage them to speak up, learn new words, refresh their memory, and so on. Now, are you ready? 1,2,3, GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I've chosen 30 sentences, I know there are more, but there could be enough for our students, then, we can add new others.

AIN'T, what does it mean?

Hi, Guys!,

Have you ever seen "AIN'T"? Where? Maybe in a lyric song? What does it mean?

Well, according to some linguists, AIN'T comes from the contraction of AM NOT and it seems to have appeared in 1706. One century later, in Cockney dialect in London, AIN'T began to be used as a generic contraction for ARE NOT or IS NOT. Then, it was also used as a contraction of has not and have not. Even more, in some dialects, does not or do not can be replaced by AIN'T.

As you can imagine or see, AIN'T is a colloquialism. So those who use this are regarded as uneducated, informal or improper people. However, I can give some famous examples: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" or  "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone".

Therefore, I think it's interesting to know the origin and uses of this word, we just want to learn English, no matter if it's not always the Standard proper English ;)

Practical Idioms as well as Decorating Your Classroom

Hi, Teachers!,

Many times in class, our students ask us "How can I say 'hacer la vista gorda' in English?", "Fat sight?", "Oh, no, no, ... they say: "Turn a blind eye".
Becuase of that, it's very constructive and effective if you use a small white board in class and every week, you write down a new English idiom for your students.Even more, I'm going to propose you to have a look at the following list.

Obviously, you can create your own list of idioms and hang these later as a poster.
